Before it was a record, Grandpa’s Mill was a real place. My grandpa’s feed mill in Albany, Kentucky, right on the Tennessee line.
I grew up working in that mill, raised on Conway Twitty, Johnny Paycheck, and Merle Haggard, and on the stories the old-timers told while their feed got loaded. They’d been telling them their whole lives. I started writing them down.
When Grandpa passed, the family sold the mill. These songs are how I kept it. I wrote them in the quiet hours, between loading feed and playing bars on the weekend, and every one of the twelve is mine alone.
We cut it with David Ferguson, the man behind the board for Johnny Cash, Sturgill Simpson, and Tyler Childers, at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, Georgia.
